You remember one strong master password. The manager creates and fills a different random password for everything else.

What a password manager is

Think of it as a locked notebook that lives on your phone and computer. It does three things:

  1. Creates long random passwords for you.
  2. Remembers them all, in an encrypted vault.
  3. Fills them in when you log in.

You remember one master password, and it does the rest.

Why not just remember them?

Nobody can memorize a hundred random passwords. So most of us reuse a few, and that is what gets people hacked. As the US cyber agency CISA says, with a manager "we only need to remember one strong password".

What it looks like day to day

  1. You visit a shopping site and tap login.
  2. Your phone or browser offers your saved login.
  3. You confirm with your fingerprint or face.
  4. You are in.

When you sign up somewhere new, it suggests a strong password and saves it. You never need to see it.

Is it safe to keep everything in one place?

This is the most common worry. Good managers encrypt your vault on your own device, so that the company cannot read it. If you want the details, read how password managers work.

WorryThe reality
"What if it gets hacked?"Attackers get scrambled data, not your passwords. See what happens
"What if I forget the master password?"Plan for this with backups
"What if my phone is lost?"Your vault syncs to your new device

Reused passwords are a far bigger risk than a well-built manager.

Which one should I use?

Our comparison goes through the options. Your phone or browser may already have one, as we explain in browser vs password manager. Any reputable choice beats none.
