What built-in tools do well

Built-in tools are easy. There is nothing to install, and they fit neatly into your phone or computer. Modern versions from Apple and Google generate random passwords, warn you about reused or leaked ones, and sync through your account.

If you own only Apple devices, or use Chrome everywhere, they can serve you well.

Where they fall short

  • Crossing ecosystems. An iPhone with a Windows laptop, for example, takes more effort.
  • Your account is the single key. Whoever gets into your Google or Apple account may be able to reach your saved passwords, so that account needs strong protection and two-factor login. Read why email is the master key.
  • Browser-stealing malware. Infostealer malware targets saved browser logins, especially on computers without strong protections. See keyloggers and password stealers.
  • Fewer emergency options. Planning for family access can be harder.

What about a plain browser profile with no account?

Saving passwords in a browser with no sync and no device password is the weak version of this. Anyone who picks up your unlocked computer may be able to view them. Always keep a lock screen, and consider disk encryption.

Our advice

  1. If you use nothing today, turn on your browser's password saving now. It is a real improvement.
  2. If you use several brands of devices, or want to share with family, move to a dedicated manager.
  3. When you switch, follow our steps for moving safely, then delete the old saved passwords.
