Your first day with a hardware wallet sets the tone for years of safety. Set aside an hour, and do not rush. This how-to is part of our guide to hardware wallets explained.

Before you start

Find a quiet, private room. Have a pen and paper or card, and keep your phone out of the room. If you have not bought one yet, read how to buy a hardware wallet safely.

Step 1: Check the device

Look at the box. Is it what you expected, from the place that you expected? Seals vary by brand, so read the maker's guidance. A real device has no phrase on a card and no PIN already set.

Step 2: Install the official app

Type the maker's address yourself, avoiding search ads. Download its app. Fake apps exist, so check carefully.

Step 3: Update the firmware

If asked, install the latest firmware through the official app. Your device should show a confirmation. See firmware updates.

Step 4: Set a PIN

Choose a strong PIN on the device. It protects you if someone steals the device. See PIN vs seed phrase vs passphrase.

Step 5: Generate your phrase

Choose "create new wallet". The device shows your words on its own screen.

Step 6: Confirm your backup

The device will ask you to confirm the words. Read them from your paper, so that you are checking your written copy.

Step 7: Check a receiving address

In the app, choose receive. Check that the address on the device's screen matches the app. This protects you from malware that swaps addresses.

Step 8: Send a small test

Send a small amount from your exchange. Wait for it to arrive. If you want to be thorough, test your backup before moving larger funds.

Step 9: Move the rest and store your backup

Send the remainder, checking the address on the device. Then store your backup safely, as explained in where to store a seed phrase.
